Loose trousers or leggings or alternatively a gypsy style skirt worn on the hips is
ideal. This allows you room for movement. Also we dance barefoot or if you wish you can wear ballets pumps or
similar. Also if you have a scarf or shawl you can tie around your hips to add emphasis. You can buy coin style
belts online also. However if you do not have one do not worry.
Clothing to avoid: Trainers as they are too grippy and don’t allow for flex in your foot and we often use the balls of
the feet for movements. Socks are they are too slippery. Jeans as they are too restrictive.
Do I have to show my belly?
No, not if you do not wish to. As a professional I have mine on show to assist in
flexibility and to display more subtle intricate movements, as do many other professional dancers you may have
seen, however you do not have to have it showing to belly dance and many choose not to. In fact it is actually
still illegal today in Egypt for dancers to have a bare midriff. Some dancers also choose to wear a specially
designer body stocking which is usually a sheer mesh stocking that covers the abdomen.
Do I need to bring anything to class?
I always recommend bringing a bottle of water to class as we can get warm whilst
dancing and it is always sensible to keep hydrated.
